Winter is still here and the cold weather is set to continue, are you prepared?

With winter still sending shivers of cold down our spines, you could still try and make things easier for you with a range of products that will smoothen this winter period. Getting snowed in at your home can be quite the hassle, especially if you have deadlines to meet every day, which is often the case. A good snow shovel is what will help clear those paths and perhaps give you the exercise your body needs in this cold season.

There are several versions to choose from. You could go with the Horse Muck style shovel, which is quite sturdy and can pick up a serious amount of load each time. This comes with a plastic handle and a strong tray and helps you work efficiently. You could also consider an aluminium snow shifter shovel. Relatively new on the market, it comes with a strong aluminium shovel head giving you more leverage while you are at work. If you live in one of those heavy-duty snow areas, then you may want to invest in an ergonomic shovel. This is necessary, since you will be spending a good amount of time each day working on clearing snow and you will need something that will support your back while you work.

One great thing about the snow is that it’s also the time for some great family one. And the one thing that gets brought out as often as the shovel is the sledge. There are several models of sledges you can choose from depending on what you need to do with it. Allow the children to have a whale of a time with a snow glider sledge. These are made of plastic, extremely durable and can easily carry the weight of children. If you just want to lug about things from the house to say your car or to the shed, you could think of the simple plastic sledge that you can pile things onto and move around. Of course, small children will have other plans for it.

One thing that really helps in breaking down heavy blocks of snow is rock salt. Notorious for blocking up paths and roads, buying heavy-duty bags of this can help you break down the snow over the weekends and then shovel it out of the way. Maintaining your road way then, can be an easier task. It will also prevent your pathways from becoming slippery and a hazard to young and old alike.

Investing in some good quality snow products this year will help you tide over the cold in a much more comfortable manner.

Was your water feature damaged this winter?

Well with what looks like the worst of the cold grim winter weather behind us, and the fresh spring weather sweeping in now might be a good time to do a spot of water feature “spring cleaning”.

The harsh winter weather may have paid a toll this year on your water features. While you were in doors sat by a toasty fire all winter, your water features were outdoors in the cold wintery snow.  A properly designed and built water feature will suffer no weather issues so as it is maintained properly beforehand. However if you are an owner of water fountain of any sort, and your water feature was left all winter uncovered by a winter protector then you may notice some minor cracks in the actual feature. This could have happened for a variety of reasons with the main one being a water feature which was not been correctly covered causing the water inside to expand which has caused the water feature to crack.

If you are wondering what to do with the water in the feature before winter, the best option is to completely drain it. Once it is fully drained then use a suitable water feature protection cover to cover as much of the surface as possible, preventing any cracks.

If you are unfortunate and do stumble on a few hairline cracks in your water feature, they may well be fixable with a few easy steps and a little patience. The use of a sealant called epoxy may be able to repair any small hairline cracks.

If your water feature has picked up a few leaks over the winter season, there is no need to worry. Simply get your hands on some sort of spray seal. What this does is simply heals over where there is a leak. The spray seals are perfect for fixing any sort of minor leaks from any gaskets or pipes from the horrendous winter month’s wear and tear. Good thing is, is that they will repair cracks or leaks in just about anything. Essentially you are doing the job of an experienced repair man. Usually there are two types available, one being black and the other being clear. Generally the black spray is used for interior leaks and the clear spray is for exterior leaks. This is simply due to the visibility of the sprays.

Algae are another water feature damaging element that you need to avoid. This is the time of year where algae will start to grow. With the temperatures increasing this provides a perfect breeding environment for this bacterium.

What is algae you ask? Well, Algae are a large and diverse group of eukaryotic (complex-celled) photosynthetic organisms. The green algae are primitive members of kingdom Plantae, though other types of algae are outside the kingdom entirely. Land plants evolved from green algae about 500 million years ago. The algae are a paraphyletic group, meaning they did not descend from a common ancestor. Algal groups have independently evolved several times in life on Earth, representing a beneficial strategy adopted by parallel evolutionary paths. (Just a little science and history for you).

A simple way to prevent this nasty bacteria forming is the use of an algae stopper. Simply spraying your water feature with this repellent will aid in preventing algae from growing.  A few key things to consider when using an algae stopper are that they are not suitable for fish or other marine life; they are not harmful to birds or any other animals and will also prevent a slime build up inside your water feature.

So remember not to worry if you do notice a small crack in your water feature. Take the appropriate action and don’t forget to cover it next year when the temperatures drop again, but let’s not think about the cold weather summer is next!

Keeping Your Walkways And Paths Cleared Using Rocksalt and a Shovel

Depending on where you happen to live, winter is either on its way or already there. And with the onset of the winter season, comes the dreaded winter weather which almost always means snow. So this mean that unless you have a motorized type of snow throwing machine, you will be using snow shovels and rock salt to aid with clearing paths for the home.

With this in mind, you may want to make sure you have a good shovel in your shed and if you don’t getting one might be a good idea. The choices are really pretty standard in the end, there are the Plastic end shovels and the Metal end shovels. The real differences here actually have to do with the design of the shovel itself. The shape is either one of two ways, either a straight line from the handle to the end of the shovel, and the type of shovel that has a bend in it so that it saves wear and tear on the user's back.

Of course the materials used to manufacture the shovel will affect the price, but I would spend a little bit more on the shovel with the angle to it to save on the wear and tear of your back.

As far as Rocksalt is concerned, there are many different brands available on the market today that have varying price ranges, but they all basically perform the same basic task, and that's to keep your walkways and driveways cleared before and after a snowfall. This is done when the rocksalt is applied to the driveway and walkways, as the salt causes the snow to break up in reaction to the salt thus making it much easier to be moved.

Applying an small amount of rocksalt to your walkway and driveway before any heavy snow has accumulated will make the clearing of the snowfall a much easier task, rather than waiting for the snow to stop and then trying to remove it all at once.

Having your supplies in before the snow arrives will ensure you are fully prepared and ready for the winter blizzards.

Keeping Paths and Driveway Clear in the Winter Weather.

Here are a few tips to keep you safe and dry in the winter months. Dress in layers and wear good snow boots and gloves. Basic tools to start with; snow shovels, salt, sand, tall stake markers, and for some, a good snow blower. While shovelling is good exercise, for some it is too much of a physical challenge. Snow blowers do an excellent job on small and large areas. Some people like to use tall wooden stakes, as markers for walk areas, garden paths and drive ways. You will know where your garden begins and save on damage from blades or ice agents.

Remember when shovelling or using a snow blower, leave room for the car doors to open. Throwing the snow into the street may or may not, be a good idea depending on where you live, and how far apart your neighbours are. Remember to clear the snow from the street that is in front of a walk way or driveway. When city ploughs come through, pushing snow to the sides of the road, you could end up with more shovelling to get out of your driveway. Once the snow has stopped falling and your driveways and walking areas are clear, cover them with rock salt or calcium chloride (easier on concrete) and or sand for a little traction.

Prepare for winter with your winter care pack

Getting ready for winter is not a task most of us relish. After the Christmas season passes and our New Year’s resolutions are long forgotten, we still have to deal with the snow, sleet, and most of all the cold. Sleet and snow can make it difficult for us to get where we need to go. Inadequate maintenance of our driveways, for example can lead to expensive downtime if we injure ourselves.

The best way to avoid injury to ourselves and others is to keep our walkways clear. Providing a winter care package, preparedness kit, or whatever a person would like to call his collection is a good way to make sure we have the items to prevent accidents that bring either pain to us our loved ones, or financial injury to our pocket books.

Preparing a winter care package is relatively easy. Start with the basics snow shovels or a snow blower and rock salt for the home. Pick up an extra shovel to keep in your car for emergencies. Don't forget windshield scrapers and brushes to wipe off the snow or frost on the cold winter mornings. You can even stock up on tea, coffee or hot chocolate to make sure that you have something warm to drink at home after using your winter care package. Just remember to take breaks when shovelling snow.

Adapting Your Garden for Winter Fun

Winter is here, but that doesn't mean your garden has to suffer. In addition to caring for your plants and maintaining the landscape, you can add any number of festive touches to make your garden a true winter wonderland in time for the holiday season.

For example, you can't go wrong with Christmas imagery. Sledges and bright lights make wonderful decorations that can be arranged around your plants or plant posts without harming the health of your garden. If you have anything sturdy and durable, a little red ribbon won't hurt their survival.

You could also try planting something new, something festive. Berried bushes can make a delightful addition to larger gardens, especially holly - holly leaves won't lose their colour even in the dead of winter, making a beautiful contrast to snowy lawns.

If you feel like planning ahead for the years to come, think about re-planting your very own Christmas tree. The average evergreen can add eight to ten inches per year. Just make sure local weather conditions are conductive to their growth.

As long as you take care of your plants, maintain good gardening habits - and don't let neglect working outside just because it gets cold! - There’s no reason why your garden can't shine just as well in winter months as the height of summer.
