Preparing your fountain ready for Winter

As the evenings get darker and the mornings colder its now time to start preparing your garden fountain ready for the winter ahead.

During the past few days in many parts of the United Kingdom overnight temperatures have dropped to almost freezing.

When you next get chance during daylight hours drain your water feature. Larger fountains may have drain plugs but on smaller fountains you need to literally pour the water out. When pouring the water out always remember to take care when lifting. Ensure all the water has been removed, a towel can be used to mop up water in hard to reach places.

The fountain then needs to be covered, a fountain protection cover simply places over the top of the water feature and pulls tight at the base with a handy draw string. Several sizes of winter covers are available depending on the fountains height and width. Even if you are planning to store in a garage or shed we still advise it is covered as temperatures can still drop below freezing.

When preparing your fountain for the winter its also a great opportunity to clean the bowls and pools. A simple scrubbing brush and cleaner (Fountain Grime and Lime) is all that you should need. Once cleaned the water feature can be stored away safe in the knowledge that come Spring time you will be able to place back into your garden and enjoy the soothing sound of flowing water once more.
